Stewardship
The religious idea of stewardship is that everything we have belongs to God and we are permitted to use it while we are here on Earth. As Christians, we believe that God will hold us all accountable for how we use the many gifts entrusted to our care to glorify him and minister to others (Luke 19:12-27; 1 Corinthians 4:2; 2 Corinthians 5:10).
Our stewardship of time, talent, and money is not an effort to create a better relationship with God. Rather, it is a response that comes out of our personal relationship with God through following Christ as our Savior. It is not done to receive something from God; it is a way of showing gratitude to God for our many blessings.
Good stewardship is at the heart of good discipleship. 2 Corinthians provides several stewardship principles to help us grow in this important spiritual discipline.
Every Christian has a stewardship responsibility and must make a personal stewardship decision. Attitude in giving is important. The Christian steward will give willingly to the Lord. Christian giving will be given systematically in proportion to income and possessions. Christian’s gifts will be at a sacrifice and given joyfully from his/her heart because they have the privilege of giving.
